PHOTO OF THE WEEK IMAGES FOR DECEMBER, 2012

Click on any of the below images or titles to see web page versions.

December 3rd, 2012 – Bosque Sandhill’s – Bosque de Apache Wildlife Preserve, New Mexico

The first week of December we drove down to the Bosque de Apache National Wildlife Refuge south of Socorro, NM with a friend of ours. This time of year there are thousands of migratory birds that use the land along the Rio Grande River as a stopover on their journey south for the winter. We were not disappointed in what awaited us, although there were fewer birds there this year than last. It is still an amazing site to see the magnitude of winged creatures on in one spot. On top of the beauty of the birds and scenery, the full moon also came up over the waters to punctuate the end of our day at the Bosque. The Bosque is south of Albuquerque about 1 ½ hours. Take Interstate 25 towards and past Socorro. Exit the freeway at US Highway 380 towards San Antonio. Turn right at State Highway 1 and follow the signs to the entrance to the Preserve, There is a $5.00 fee for entry per vehicle.

The USGS (GPS) coordinates for Bosque Sandhill’s are Latitude 33°49’44”, Longitude 106°52’42”.

December 10th, 2012 – Entrada – Taos, New Mexico

This is my next door neighbor’s front entry gate. This was the first big snow of the winter. I would venture a guess of approximately 3-4 inches of snow fell during the day. With the snow blowing directly into my face it made for interesting maneuvers to keep the flakes off of the front of the lens. If you look closely, the Union Jack is flying under the US Flag. Could make you second guess that we are actually in Taos. This is located east of the Taos Plaza along US Highway 64, then turn right on Dolan Street. I will be on your right side. The snow adds a lot to the image, so try it in the winter only.
The USGS (GPS) coordinates for Entrada are Latitude 36°23’50”, Longitude 105°34’14”.

December 17th, 2012 – Lone Tree – Valdez, New Mexico

This tree & tractor are in the middle of open farm land. With the new fresh snow from the night before, everything around the tree was smooth pure white. I was also driving down an elevated on a road that runs down a large vertical slope, so the angle of the camera played a large part of this image working. When I took this image I visualized a black and white image. Nice when it works out that way. Valdez is a village north of Taos, Rake US Highway north out of Taos, turn right on State highway 150 and then turn left onto State Highway 230. Continue north on 230 until the road comes to a Tee intersection. Turn right and go “down” the road towards Valdez. The tree will be on your left about ¾ of the way down the grade. To get this shot, you will need some snow too!!

The USGS (GPS) coordinates for Lone Tree are Latitude 36°31’55”, Longitude 105°35’12”.

December 24th, 2012 – Stop & Eat Drive In – Espanola, New Mexico

Everyone that lives in Taos and have driven down to Santa Fe go by this drive-in on the way, so there are many here in town that recognize this building. I'm not sure how long it has been there, but I would guess sometime in the 60's. It reminds me of a 50's drive-in you would see in the movie American Graffiti. The food that I have tried is excellent, but keep in mind it is a typical fast food fare. I love the homemade burrito. A painter friend of ours, Tim Horn used a painting of the Stop & Eat for the cover of his 2013 calendar. Seeing his work & the insistence of my wife gave me the idea of a late evening-light shot of the drive-in. Both color & black & white images look great. Thank you to Tim & Chris for inspiring this image. This restaurant is located at the intersection of State highway 68, and US Highways 84 & 285, right in the middle o Espanola.

The USGS (GPS) coordinates for Stop & Eat Drive-in are Latitude 35°59’25”, Longitude 106°04’04”.

December 31st, 2012 – Ruin & Wreck – Galisteo, New Mexico

This is a photo tour image from Galisteo, New Mexico, taken in early December. Galisteo is southeast of Santa Fe along State Highway 41. If driving from Santa Fe, drive north on Interstate 25. Turn south onto US Highway 285 then continue south to State Highway 41. Once in the village of Galisteo, turn right at the big church. Stay to the left of the church and mail box stands, and then head up the hill. The old car & ruin will be on your right. Even though I have never had any issues around this property, still keep in mind it is someone’s private property, and you shouldn’t take liberties with the area.

The USGS (GPS) coordinates for Ruin & Wreck are Latitude 35°23’43”, Longitude 105°56’57”.

RECENT COMMENTS FROM SUBSCRIBERS

Diane O’Connell of Carlsbad, California writes about my photo tours:

“I want to thank you for a most enjoyable afternoon touring the back roads around Santa Fe. Being my first time in New Mexico, it was the perfect way to experience areas I never would've seen or found on my own. I got a lot of fun photos of some of my favorite subjects: houses, churches and cemeteries! I so appreciated your helpful suggestions in getting good shots. I'll remember to "get down" for a different perspective :) I would highly recommend you to anyone interested in taking a photo tour!”

Diane, thank you for the kind words. It really was a fun day!!!

QUOTE OF THE MONTH

I don’t plan on posting a “Quote of the Month” in each newsletter, but when I read something that “hits home” I will share it with all of you. This month’s quote is from Ralph Nordstrom, a photographer from Lake Forest, California. I ran across Ralph through a Facebook friend who shared one of Ralph’s blog posts about a recent Ansel Adams print he had just purchased and the excitement he was feeling. In the post, Ralph included a quote from Adams, but the words that really moved me were his own……and not about the purchase itself, but how he feels about his own photography. I too have similar feelings to Ralph’s but have never been able to put them into such eloquent words. I hope you enjoy them as much as I.

“In my own experience “intensity of feeling” comes with practice, experience, patience, slowing down, quieting the brain, opening up, understanding, respect, harmony, and reverence.  There is a very technical, analytical side to photography that can easily drown out the creative, inspirational side.  It is necessary to balance the two to create successful images.  Technical excellence without soul is sterile and empty.  Great photographs begin with inspiration, awe and wonder which is then captured and communicated through an abundance of technical skill.  We don’t find inspiration every time we go out but as our eye becomes more and more aware we find inspiration in more and more places.”

You can see Ralph’s photography at his web page:  http://ralphnordstromphotography.com/
